Click the Google link for accurate times. However, it’s roughly 30 minutes from Hilo, 45 minutes from Waikoloa and 60 minutes from Kona.

Yes. We will drive 10 minutes further up the road. The parking area might have deep potholes, so it’s recommended to have a vehicle that has more clearance than a small car. Please let us know before the tour if you plan to follow behind to the stargazing location.

Yes, there is free parking in the paved parking lot

Your guide will be there at least 10 minutes prior to the tour in a blue Nissan Van, license plate EB362. When he gets there, he will walk to your vehicle to check you in.

At the Gilbert Kahele Recreation Area, 7 minutes west of the meeting spot. No restroom stops on the tour.

Nice, smooth roads with reflectors on them to see better at night. Potential patches of thick clouds on the way to the meeting spot.

Depending on the clouds, we will stargaze anywhere from 7000-9500 feet elevation.

Temperatures can be around 40°F. Dress accordingly.

We will bring parka jackets for you to use. They have pockets and a hood.

No gas stations nearby. Make sure you have 1/2 tank of gas, just to be extra safe.

Plain and neutral colors are preferred. Wearing black is hard to see in photos, so I don’t recommend that. The best colors are deep red and shades of blue. Patterns or prints distract and date your photo.

At the base of the Mauna Kea access road (not to be confused with the location in Volcanoes National Park.)
